Three Arts Building

Built in 1913 as a residence for young women studying the arts in Chicago’s Gold Coast, the Three Arts building was closed in 1990 and has sat uninhabited since, slowly losing a battle with nature as the paint falls from the ceilings and the weeds overtake the courtyard.In the fall of 2012 I was provided access to the site following an art exhibit that was staged there during the annual EXPO in Chicago. There are no lights, no heat or water.

It’s about as close you’d want to come to landing in someone’s haunted hotel nightmare, but at the same time you can sense the former life and envision a new one; as of early 2013 the landmark building is finally in the process of being repurposed as a luxury residential building. Documenting that process is high on the wishlist…
